Learning Resource Centres

Thorpe and Frinton Campus LRC

Welcome to Frinton Campus Learning Resource Centre.

The Learning Resource Centre at Frinton was opened in 2009 and provided the Campus with a brighter, larger Library and computer suite, high sloping ceilings and many windows providing wide spread views across Frinton and Walton towards the sea.

The study area is open plan, enabling the students to have easy access to our extensive Library adjacent to the excellent computer suite.

We have several relaxed and quiet sofa areas for those that love their books and aim to provide the current titles and classics to cover all reading preferences. There are constantly changing displays and decor themes to encourage the students to read for enjoyment as well as for their studies.

There are two 'learning pods' within the Learning Resource Centre which are used for small groups of teacher lead study or individual students needing a quiet place to work. Both LR1 and LR2 computer based classrooms also lead off the main area.

Although we aim to provide a quiet space to study the students often are sat in their class groups working together so the Learning Resource Centre is an extension of the classroom and the atmosphere is a relaxed but studious one.

The Learning Resource Centre is open all week but manned on a part-time basis - the Librarian (friendly and happy to help) generally covers the core hours to include break and all lunchtimes so please use those times to return/issue books - it is closed to Year 10/11's on a Friday.

At Thorpe Campus, we are fortunate to have a large, purpose-built Learning Resource Centre (LRC) that can accommodate up to 100 students at any time. Students are able to access an excellent range of fiction and non-fiction books, multimedia computers, iPads and other resources. Students are also able to use the LRC printer for printing course- and homework tasks.

Opening Times

The LRC is open every morning from 8:30am, as well as during registration (at tutors' discretion) and during break every day. For the academic year 2019/20, students will be able to visit the LRC every lunchtime, but must see the LRC manager before school, during registration (at tutors' discretion), or at break time, to sign out a lunch pass. There are limited passes available. LRC passes can be won as part of the Reading Rewards scheme for years 7 and 8.

Activities in the LRC

One of the key aims of the LRC is to encourage reading and creativity in order to make books fun and enjoyable. We arrange activities throughout the year, including themed displays (recent examples being Shakespeare's Birthday, Banned Books Week and Dyslexia Awareness Week), competitions and interactive tasks, and author visits. The LRC at Thorpe Campus also recently hosted the Museum Without A Home exhibition.

All Year 7 and 8 students visit the LRC once a week with their English class for the opportunity to renew or change their private readers, and develop their reading and comprehension skills. Year 7 and 8 students work on our Reading Rewards scheme, for which they earn prizes for completing books throughout the year. The Year 7 and Year 8 English class who have collectively read the most books each term will be awarded the Reading Cup.

LRC Displays and Competitions

There are regular displays and competitions with prizes in the LRC. Details will be in the College News or on the TV Screens.

Film Club is on every Friday, 3:10pm at Thorpe Campus in the Learning Resource Center. The film finish time varies each week, depending on what film is shown. The clubs finishing time will be put in the College News each week. Students must have a permission letter signed to register for Film Club. Letters can be found in the LRC.
