This year’s sports day was a great success with over 750 students at Thorpe Campus taking part. As we are part of the Olympic Legacy, it has been our main aim to highlight that sport is a good way of leading a healthy lifestyle, to get active and to get involved by trying new events. With this in mind we asked students to practise and join after-school athletics clubs and we organised many more athletic competitions against other schools.
Before the event each tutor group sat down with their tutor to discuss who was going to participate in which event, our aim was to get everyone in each tutor group to take part regardless of ability.
The day started at 9.00am with the Year 7s taking part in the field events: Year 8 started at 10.00am and Year 9 at 11.20am. The field events consisted of – Javelin, Shot putt, Discus, High Jump, Tug of War and the 1500m.
Twelve tutor groups took part, fighting it out to be the winner. 12 points were awarded for 1st place, 11 for 2nd place and 10 points for 3rd, going down to 1 point for 12th place so, it was important that someone represented their tutor group to gain as many points as they could.
The afternoon events consisted of the track events – 100m, 200m, 300m, 800m and 4x 100m relay.
There was a great atmosphere from all the spectators, banners were made and faces were painted. Students, staff and parents cheered and supported the competitors. The behaviour of students throughout the day was fantastic and the encouragement, support and motivation for each other was great to see.
Thank you to all those who took part and helped in making the day successful, a big thank you to our A level students who did a fantastic job.
A fantastic sports day!
