This year’s sports day was a great success with over 750 students at Thorpe Campus taking part. Before the event each Tutor group sat down with their tutor to discuss who was going to participate in which event, our aim was to get everyone in each Tutor group to take part regardless of ability.
The day started at 09:00 am with Year 8 taking part in the field events followed by Year 7 at 10.00am and Year 9 and 11.20am. The field events consisted of – Javelin, Shot putt, Discus, High Jump, Tug of War, Rounders ball throw and 1500m. Twelve tutor groups took part, fighting it out to be the winner. 12 points were awarded for 1st place, 11 for 2nd place and 10 points for 3rd, going down to 1 point for 12th place, so it was important that someone represented their tutor group to gain as many points as possible.
The afternoon events consisted of the track events – 100m, 200m, 300m, 400m, 800m and 4x 100m relay, and not forgetting the staff relay.
The final race of the day was the staff v students relay: The students won! It was so good to see so many staff taking part and really nice for the students to see their teachers doing something different.
The behaviour of the students throughout the day was fantastic and the encouragement, support and motivation they showed each other was great to see. There was a great atmosphere from all the spectators; banners were made and faces were painted. Students, staff and parents cheered and supported the competitors.
As we are part of the Olympic Legacy, our main aim was to highlight that sport is a good way of leading a healthy lifestyle, getting active and getting involved by trying new events. With this in mind we asked students to practise and join afterschool athletics clubs and organised many more athletic competitions against other schools.
Thanks for all those who took part and helped in making the day successful, a big thank you to our A level students who did a fantastic job helping out.
