Sainsbury's School Games Report

The Sainsbury’s School Games is a growing sports competition with an aim to provide an  Olympic experience for all athletes and staff involved. Held in Sheffield this year, we were lucky enough at Tendring Technology College, to have two current students competing in the Volleyball competition of the Games; Fran Smith-Daye of Year 11 and Jonah Thomas, Year 12 played for England Central along with former TTC students Jessica Lane, Georgia Ibbotson and Bethany Ibbotson. These athletes were selected through numerous trials, involving the top coaches and players in the country – it is fair to say, that selection for the Games is truly a great achievement.

All teams played each other in a competition that saw the likes of Scotland, Wales and Ireland fighting to take home the trophy. A tough first day of competition meant that both teams missed out on the chance to play in the Gold medal match. Both Jonah and Fran played instrumental parts in their teams’ success, with the boy’s team taking home a bronze medal and the girls narrowly missing out to the Scots, gaining a respectable fourth position.

As a team manager, my role was to look after the team in all aspects of the competition – from helping the team courtside, organising transport and food, to general morale boosting. It has been a great honour to work alongside these athletes and coaches, and for all involved, it was a great tournament!
