Art and Design
Ethos and Overview
The Art & Design Department aims to establish a creative atmosphere in which students can develop their visual awareness and related practical skills, learning about and developing a critical appreciation of the richness and variety of our cultural past and present.

The departments' results at GCSE and A level are very good and always above national and local averages, an upward trend we are expecting to continue as new courses come on line. To this end students are given access to the best possible materials and encouraged to develop independent working habits.

Key Stage 3 Art - Thorpe Campus
At Thorpe Campus, the Department works in two large studios, equipped for most 2D and 3D art work, including computer aided work. The opportunity exists for all students to experience working across the full range of art activities undertaken by the department at Key Stage 3, with further opportunities to explore areas of special interest in more depth in preparation for exam courses in Years 10 and 11.

Key Stage 4 Art - Frinton Campus
The Frinton Campus department operates in two large fully equipped purpose-built studios, complete with ICT facilities, and in a smaller dedicated Sixth Form studio.

At this lever, Art is a very popular and successful optional subject. In Years 10 and 11, students have the opportunity to study for GCSE, covering a full and wide range of materials and techniques.

Key Stage 5 Art - Frinton Campus
The Sixth Form has around 60 students studying Art and Design, by far the largest of any local Sixth Form. The interest and success generated by such a large Sixth Form has enabled the building up of very popular and vibrant courses.

Students can choose from a range of options; traditional AS/A2 Art and Design, BTEC National Certificate and BTEC 1st Diploma in Art and Design (Vocational A Level and GCSE equivalents)

The Sixth Form have their own studio which is open for use both in lesson and in 'free 'time. At this level, students use professional materials and adopt professional working practices, underpinned with a full programme of gallery visits, in the UK and abroad, visiting speakers and practitioners.

The exceptionally good Sixth Form results enable us to place high numbers of students into Art and Design careers or into Art and

Design based Higher Education courses, either Foundation or directly into Degree courses.
